What is Medicare Savings Program?

The Medicare Savings Program (MSP) is a government program in the United States that helps eligible Medicare beneficiaries with their Medicare expenses. The program is designed to help individuals with limited income and resources by paying for some or all of their Medicare premiums, deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. There are four different types of MSPs, each with different eligibility requirements:

  1. Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) Program: This program pays for Medicare Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments for individuals with incomes below the federal poverty level.

  2. Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary (SLMB) Program: This program pays for Medicare Part B premiums for individuals with incomes between 100% and 120% of the federal poverty level.

  3. Qualifying Individual (QI) Program: This program pays for Medicare Part B premiums for individuals with incomes between 120% and 135% of the federal poverty level.

  4. Qualified Disabled and Working Individuals (QDWI) Program: This program pays for Medicare Part A premiums for individuals who are disabled and working, but have limited income and resources.
